Connecting Your Discord Server

Link your Discord server to your Tabletop League organization and Teo — the Tabletop League Discord bot — becomes your tournament assistant in Discord: posting match results and announcements to your channels, syncing competitor roles, and answering slash commands right where your community already hangs out.

Linking is done once per server with the /setup slash command, run inside Discord. This page walks through it.

What linking enables

Once your server is linked to your organization:

  • Channel notifications — subscribe any channel to a competition (or to all of your org's competitions) with /subscribe, and Teo posts match results and announcements there. See Subscribing channels below.
  • Competitor role sync — automatically assign a Discord role to confirmed participants. See Competitor Role Sync.
  • Match nudges & threads — reminders that reach players in Discord, including per-match coordination threads. See Notifications & Nudges.
  • Support role pings — designate a role to be pinged for organizer support in group threads (configured on the website under your organization's Settings → Discord).

Before you start

The /setup command verifies authority on both sides — your Discord server and your Tabletop League organization — so a few things need to be in place first:

  1. Teo is in your server. Invite Teo to your server if it isn't there yet — the link opens Discord's authorization screen, where you pick the server (you'll need the "Manage Server" permission there to add it).
  2. You have the "Manage Server" permission in the Discord server you want to link.
  3. Your Discord account is linked to your Tabletop League account. Link it under Settings → Connections on the website — this is how Teo knows who you are.
  4. You are an Owner or Admin of the organization on Tabletop League. Members without one of those roles can't link servers.

A Discord server can be linked to one organization at a time. An organization can have multiple servers linked.

Running /setup

  1. In your Discord server, type /setup in any channel and run the command.
  1. Teo looks up your Tabletop League account from your Discord identity and lists the organizations where you're an Owner or Admin. Pick the organization you want to link this server to.
  1. Choose a manager role. Members with this Discord role can manage Teo in your server — running /subscribe and /competitor-role — without needing the "Manage Server" permission. A manager role is required when linking a server for the first time.
  1. Teo confirms the link. That's it — your server is now connected.

On the website, go to your organization's Settings → Discord page. Your linked server appears there, and you can set the optional support role — the role Teo pings when players ask for help in group threads.

In Discord, /subscribe is now available: run it in any channel to start receiving match results for a competition.

Subscribing channels to a competition

With the server linked, anyone with Manage Server or the manager role can wire channels up:

  1. Go to the channel you want notifications in and run /subscribe.
  2. Pick one of your organization's competitions — or subscribe the channel to all of the organization's competitions.
  3. Teo confirms, and match results for that competition start appearing in the channel.

Run /unsubscribe in a channel to stop its notifications.

Running /setup again in an already-linked server updates the existing link (for example, to change the manager role). It won't create a duplicate.

Troubleshooting

"Discord account must be linked to a platform account"

Teo couldn't match your Discord identity to a Tabletop League account. Link your Discord account under Settings → Connections, then run /setup again.

Teo can't find any organizations for your account

Your Tabletop League account isn't an Owner or Admin of any organization. Ask an existing Owner or Admin to either promote you or run /setup themselves. See Creating an Organization if you don't have one yet.

"You must be an owner or admin of this organization"

You're a member of the organization, but linking a server requires the Owner or Admin role.

"This Discord server is already linked to another organization"

Each Discord server can only be linked to one organization. If the server should belong to your organization instead, the link to the other organization has to be removed first — contact the person who set it up.

The /setup command doesn't appear

Teo isn't in your server yet, or Discord hasn't finished registering the commands. Check that the bot is a member of the server, and give it a minute after inviting — slash commands can take a moment to show up.
